The Senior Corporate Counsel is responsible for executing Apria’s legal program.



  • Assists in execution of the Company's legal program, with special emphasis on employee relations, risk management, and litigation.
  • Drafts, prepares, reviews and revises corporate policies and manuals.
  • Responsible for being aware of proposed and existing legislation affecting the Company and working with others in the legal department to communicate new legal developments to appropriate company personnel.
  • Provides legal advice and assistance to field and corporate management staff on questions involving company legal issues such as FLSA compliance, employee classification, employee relations, risk management, patient/customer relations and billing practices.
  • Prepares training materials and memoranda regarding legal issues affecting the Company and its divisions.
  • Conducts presentations to or prepares educational materials or reports for corporate and field personnel, including management and sales employees, regarding applicable laws and regulations.
  • May conduct or participate in litigation and assist in the administration of outside counsel relationships.
  • Drafts agreements and other documents, which may include settlement agreements, discovery, revenue-producing contracts, professional services agreements, and other operational documents.
  • Conducts investigations of employee claims, and allegations of violations of the information privacy and security provisions of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (“HIPAA”), the Anti-Kickback Statute, the Stark law and patient inducement laws.
  • May supervise Corporate Counsel and other staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • May manage all middle management of the department and may be responsible for the performance management, hiring, and discipline of middle management within the department.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • Four-year college degree or equivalent experience is required.
  • J.D. (or equivalent) degree is required.
  • Five years of related experience is required.


Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Professional Designations

  • A law degree (Juris Doctor or equivalent) and admittance in good standing to a State Bar is required.
  • Must be entitled to practice law in the jurisdiction where employed.



  • Reliable, motivated and strong work ethic with proactive approach and flexibility.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, effectively communicating sound legal advice coupled with a strong understanding of business needs.
  • Strong research skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple responsibilities simultaneously while maintaining high quality and performance under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently as well as be a member of a project team, be self-motivated, manage high volume of work, prioritize effectively, meet numerous deadlines and repeatedly shift between assignments/projects.
  • Ability to problem solve and provide timely guidance to internal company clients.
  • Detail-oriented with strong attention to accuracy and follow-up.
  • Excellent organizational skills with ability to work in a paperless environment.


Computer Skills

  • Proficiency with MS Excel and MS Office required.
  • Proficiency with matter management and tracking systems such as CounselLink or Legal Tracker.
  • Legal research skills such as use of LexisNexis or Westlaw.

Language Skills

  • English (reading, writing, verbal)

Other Skills

  • Excellent communication skills, both written (e-mails/letters/memos) and verbal (telephonic and in-person), are a must.
  • Interpersonal and virtual skills are critical – must be internal-customer oriented, a team player, and able to balance multiple projects and their respective deadlines.
  • Tech-savvy and proficient in digital communication such as Ring Central, Microsoft Teams, etc. a plus.



  • Previous healthcare or other related experience either at a law firm or corporate environment.
  • Labor and Employment, Litigation and Risk Management experience.
  • Contract drafting and negotiation.






This is a stationary position that requires frequent sitting or standing, repetitive wrist motions, grasping, speaking, listening, close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus.  It also may require occasional lifting, carrying, walking, climbing, kneeling, bending/stooping, twisting, pulling/pushing, walking, bending, stooping, and reaching above the shoulder. This position also may require the occasional lifting of equipment up to 50 lbs.



Work is performed in a designated remote location/home office setting that is conducive to a productive work environment. Remote work locations must be able to support any Information Services and/or departmental-specific system requirements to support business needs and must be in clean, professional, and safe condition, free from hazards, and other dangers.



Occasional travel may be required.
